Press Release - Public Art Commission at Sunnymeade Court
Posted on Tuesday 8 December 2009
Public Art Commission at Meadow Gardens, Jackson Road, North Oxford
Artist Suzanne O'Driscoll
Commissioned by A2Dominion for their new mixed housing development.
Public Art Consultant (Oxford City Council), Abi Hehir
Stainless steel 6.5m x 3.5m Completed November 2009
In 2008 Suzanne O'Driscoll was commissioned by A2Dominion to produce an artwork to hang on the exterior wall of their new housing development in North Oxford, overlooking the busy A40 Northern ring road. Suzanne began the research for this large metal sculpture with the idea it should reflect Oxford City's unique areas of natural landscape, its plants and local natural history. Suzanne feels that the green areas of Oxford not only give us a visual treat but also serve Oxford's community and visitors, by providing areas for relaxing, recreation and sport, as well as places for learning within colleges, schools, museums and local societies.
As her ideas grew for this public art location she made visual connections to the nearby waterways, parks, rivers, meadows and local gardens. She eventually chose a number of plants, a meadow dandelion, a marsh buttercup, a rare snakes head fritillary, a water lily and a snail. In her final design these plants connect together, flowing and twisting on the wall following lines reminiscent of the complex waterways on a map of Oxford.
The sculpture is made from stainless steel sheet and the 19 separate shapes were cut following Suzanne's drawings, using the latest technology in laser metal cutting. A local company, DMS in Maidenhead, worked closely with Suzanne to cut and fabricate her work. The stainless steel of this sculpture changes constantly with the light, reflecting the sky, accentuating the direction of the grain and producing a distinctive shadow at certain times of the day.
Suzanne hopes that her sculpture is harmonious with the building as well as providing a distinctive feature for the neighbourhood and an Oxford landmark for passers by.

HRH The Duchess Of Cornwall Visits Emmaus

To celebrate the opening of the Emmaus Hostel in Oxford, HRH The Duchess of Cornwall unveiled the Plaque and spent the morning talking to a number of dignitaries present in addition to the Bugler team and those present from our client, A2Dominion.
After a quick lesson in etiquette and ways to address HRH, the day took on a far more informal feel as Tom Bugler had the honour of introducing HRH to the Bugler Construction team. As the picture above reveals, smiles were never far away as joined by a worried looking, Mark King, and a “never camera shy”, Bill Noon, our Project Manager, Pat Corrigan, shared a few light-hearted moments with HRH. This was a fitting way to mark the successful completion of yet another great project working with our partner, A2Dominion.

Bugler FC
Posted on Wednesday 1 April 2009
After many years of chat and two years in possession of a kit, the Bugler football team finally took to the pitch to take part in a 5 aside match against A2Dominion.

The Bugler line up of 8 players (from left to right in picture Ray West, Adam Corrigan, Bill Noon, Dave Culliton, Andy Bugler, Tony Jobson, Pat Corrigan, Karim Najm) meant that some tired old legs could take a well earned rest as we operated a rolling (being the appropriate word in certain cases) substitute. The setting was a clay pitch on The Lisson Grove Estate in Marylebone and fear built up when the A2Dominion 8 appeared and began chatting with all the local lads who, it turns out, they play against each week. It was soon apparent that the Bugler team were going to struggle against opponents who clearly still play regularly and with 20 minutes to go the score stood at 6-0. Suddenly, the Bugler team remembered how to play football and Bill Noon went down in history to become the first goal scorer for Bugler. After conceding another goal, Andy Bugler weighed in with two late goals and all in the Bugler team were visibly frustrated (although physically relieved) when the final whistle went with the score at 7-3. Many thanks to Alan Fernandez from A2Dominion for organizing the match and we look forward to the rematch. If anyone else fancies a game, please contact Bill Noon at Head Office.
Quiz Victory for Bugler "Arrested" Developments
Posted on Thursday 19 March 2009
After literally minutes of strenuous training, the newly formed Bugler Developments Quiz Team put in a blistering inaugural performance in a charity fund raising quiz on 19th March.
The quiz, organised by Mark Warren of BPM and held at the Three Horseshoes pub in Whetstone, was raising funds for Resourced Provision for Deaf Children at Summerside School in Barnet and North London Deaf Children's Society.
Despite nearly giving away most of the answers to everyone else in the packed pub, the Bugler team won the coveted Summerside Quiz Trophy by exhibiting their knowledge of such diverse subjects as 80's music, the periodic table and East Anglian Breweries.
Team Captain, Denis Bugler, made a very good acceptance speech, in which he was generous with his praise for the organisers, the school and even the quality of the Guinness.
Joining Denis in the celebrations were team members Mark King, Steve Tough, Alan Wilding and Dave Culliton.
The evening was a resounding success raising around £7,000 for the two organisations. Congratulations from all at Bugler to Mark and the team from Summerside School.

Construction Training Initiative Report
Posted on Sunday 1 March 2009
We have now received the CTI End of Scheme Report for our site at Ealing Road, Alperton, which was built for ASRA Housing Association.
The objectives of the Construction Training Initiative are to support unemployed, socially disadvantaged and persons from under represented groups in achieving industry recognised qualifications and site experience, leading to sustainable long-term employment in the industry.
Five trainees undertook work experience on the site; one painter and decorator, two carpenters and two bricklayers. The report stated that all trainees said they were well supported on site and that the sub-contractors provided a good range of work, which led to some excellent experience and a great opportunity to build on NVQ portfolios.
The report summarised that the trainees greatly benefited from the work experience gained and this contributed valuable site evidence towards their NVQ qualifications. The report stated that the opportunity of site placements within large developments such as Ealing Road were extremely valuable in providing employment opportunities for trainees.

Considerate Constructors Success at Church Street

Bugler Site Manager, Keith Franklin, has recently received a “Performance Beyond Compliance” award from Considerate Constructors for his efforts at our Church Street site in Newham for One Housing Group.
This award is only presented to individuals who have achieved a score of at least 4 out of a maximum of 5 points in the 8 sections of the Code of Considerate Practice.
Measures that Keith has introduced on site include excellent welfare facilities, waste segregation, energy saving and monitoring, site notices printed in other languages and “extremely good personal contact maintained with neighbours”.
Keith has developed an excellent relationship with the school which shares a boundary with our site, even going as far as allowing the pupils to decorate the walls of our site offices with their art work.
We congratulate Keith on this achievement, which demonstrates our commitment as a company to the Considerate Constructors scheme and the Code of Practice.
Site Safety Awareness in Oxford School
Posted on Saturday 3 January 2009
Operations Director, Mark King, visited the Cutteslowe Primary School in Oxford on 27th January 2009 to talk to the pupils regarding site safety.
The school is close to our Sunnymeade Court project, which will provide 30 flats for mixed tenure. The scheme is set to achieve level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes and utilizes innovative heat pump technology to save energy and carbon emissions. The Employer is A2Dominion.
With the assistance of Headteacher, Peter Renshaw, Mark delivered a presentation on site safety to the 200 plus pupils at the school during their morning assembly.
All of the pupils were given a copy of the HSE “Stay Safe” magazine on site safety for children. http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/misc447.pdf
A2Dominion have agreed to allow us to run a competition at the school in which the pupils will be invited to propose names for the new scheme. A prize will be awarded to the successful contributor.
Back To School for Bugler's Team in Haringey
Posted on Friday 2 January 2009
On 21st January 2009 Mark King (Operations Director), Shane Mackintosh (Contracts Manager and David Culliton (Pre-construction Manager) visited the Ferry Lane Primary School in Tottenham Hale. Site safety was the subject of the day, although recycling and sustainability in construction was also on the agenda.
The school is adjacent to our project for Shian Housing Association which will see us re-developing an existing pub and retail site to provide 30 flats and a new community shop.
After a meeting with the Head-teacher, Maxine Pattison and her Deputy David Mackie, the Bugler team gave their first presentation of the day to a number of parents at an informal coffee morning.
Class by class presentations to Years 5 & 6 were a great success with some really well thought out questions from the children. A big favorite was the Crucial Crew website which contains a rather gruesome interactive game showing the dangers to children on construction sites. http://www.crucial-crew.org/
An activity book on site safety was also given to all of the children, which will hopefully serve to reinforce the message of the day.
In another initiative, Bugler have donated prizes to the school to be awarded to the successful winners of a competition amongst the pupils to design a site safety poster. The winning poster will be printed and used on the site hoarding.
We look forward to a safe and friendly relationship with the school whilst we are their neighbours.
